The Garden Design Co...
THE BEFORE:
• This relatively small rear garden is situated on a new housing development in Cambridge.
• The client’s are young professional people who like to entertain, have a dog and wanted to be
able to grow veg without the dog peeing on them.
• The garden sloped up from the property and is overlooked on all sides by three story town
houses.
• The boundaries are part walls and timber fencing.

THE BRIEF:
• To create a low maintenance, contemporary and dog proof space, blending the home into the
garden.
• Design a new terrace to the rear of the house, large enough for al fresco entertaining on
‘comfortable’ furniture!
• Another seating area to be incorporated at the higher part of the garden, maybe using decking.
A pergola or other structure in this area, to be designed, creating a feature and screen from the
neighbouring properties.
• Raised planters to provide dog proof planting areas and ‘perching’ places for client!
• A contemporary water feature, with moving water but no standing water to be included in the
design.
• Retain some of the lawn.
• A lighting scheme to the new beds and borders to extend the summer evenings and provide
pleasing views during the dark winters!
• The planting to be low maintenance with a mix of architectural flowering evergreen shrubs with
perennials and grasses providing seasonal interest, texture, fragrance and colour.

From the doors leading from the kitchen there is a natural stone terrace. A raised planter, for dog proof
cultivation of fruit and vegetables, was constructed from block work, render then painted white. It has
inset lights to illuminate the lower terrace and divides the different levels.
To one side of the planter there are steps up to the higher level leading to the lawn, edged in sandstone
setts to match the paving and the decked area with water feature. Plants include a large Olive tree, three
silver birch, tree fern, architectural evergreen flowering shrubs, grasses and perennials.
