Without further ado...
Fruit and veg plot
Sow now:
Broad beans, beetroot, cabbage, calabrese, carrots, chicory, courgettes, cucumbers, fennel, french beans, kale, marrows, peas, pumpkins, radish, runner beans, salsify, spinach, squash, sweetcorn, swiss chard, turnips.
Plant now:
Artichokes, asparagus, maincrop potatoes, strawberries.
Other jobs:
- Start side-shooting tomatoes
- Mulch beds
- Earth up potatoes
- Protect root vegetables from carrot fly using a barrier of horticultural fleece
- Water fruit trees trained on walls well as they set fruit
- Protect peaches, nectarines and apricots from late frosts
- Thin gooseberry blossom
- Mulch strawberries with straw
- Protect crops from hungry pigeons
Flower garden
Jobs:
- Divide crowded clumps of daffodils, hostas and primulas
- Pinch out the top shoot (known as the apical bud) on dahlias to encourage a bushy plant
- Protect plants from aphids and slugs using our pest-repellent recipe
- Once the last frosts have passed, prune tender shrubs
- Tie in climbers to their supports
- Check that ties on newly-planted trees are not too tight
- Cut hellebores back, leaving a stem or two on each plant to set seed
