Rattan - What is it then?

Much of the garden furniture on our site is crafted from modern synthetic woven rattan, so we thought we would explain why it’s so great...

Originally, much wicker garden furniture was made from material taken from Rattan Palms, trees originating inn Africa, Asia and Australasia. This material looked great, but was never very good for garden furniture, as the weather soon takes it’s toll - especially in changeable climates. The Natural becomes brittle and discolors over time, eventually loosing it’s shape.

Enter the modern synthetic woven rattan which makes the furniture you see here totally weatherproof. The woven material is:

1) Super durable
2) UV stable - it won’t fade over time
3) Waterproof - won’t absorb moisture

This means you can leave the furniture out in the garden year-round if you wish, and with a hose-down in the spring, your rattan garden furniture will look as good as new again!

You don’t need to stain or treat the material at all, so it’s pretty much maintenance free!

One of the best bits is, because you can leave the furniture outdoors through the winter months, you don’t need to find room in the house/garage etc to store your garden furniture.

We always advise taking your cushions inside to keep them clean, ready for the next time you feel like taking the weight off...!

Note - while looking into the origins of natural rattan, we came across a bit of an interesting fact...

A number of rattan palms exude a red resin which is dramatically refered to as “Dragons Blood”!!! In olden days, this was thought to have medicinal properties and was used to dye violins among other things... “I’ll have mine in Dragons Blood Red please”!!!
